Yorkshire Day
In Skipton.
The first of August has been known as Yorkshire Day for some years and the iconic White Rose of Yorkshire flag appears all over the county.
(If you watched Alex Yee win the Triathlon yesterday in Paris you would have seen the Yorkshire flag flying near the finishing line - he trains in Leeds as does the bronze medal winner of the women’s Triathlon Beth Potter a legacy from the Brownlee brothers I would imagine. )
The day started with a grey damp morning after heavy rain (from France?)during the night. I had gone to bed early as I felt very tired and felt similar when my alarm went off for the early walk together with an ache in my limbs and head that I’ve put down to the Shingles jab yesterday. So I opted out of the walk. Later we had to go into Keighkey as we had an appointment at the EE shop to review our Wi-Fi use. Putting it in my name saved us nearly £50 a month! Obviously I had to be there and it was worth it for such a saving.
Chris then needed something from Skipton, by now the sun and heat from earlier in the week had returned. First stop coffee as I needed it to take some Paracetemol. The centre of Skipton was closed as there was an event celebrating Yorkshire Day and the church at the top of the a high Street was flying the Yorkshire flag.
I stayed looking at the stalls and children's activities that were set out in the middle of the town whilst Chris went off on his mission.
I was delighted to when a Morris Dance group started performing, perfect for my Yorkshire Day blip. This one shows them doing the traditional stick dance and you can see the stalls behind decorated with Yorkshire flags. One also tells us that Skipton has had its Market Charter since 1203, slightly longer than Bingley which was granted it’s Market Charter in 1212.
After they had finished with the sticks they took up white hankies. Fun to watch and perfect for the day,
Happy Yorkshire Day all.
