Playing life by ear.

Windy day

Just right for a sail. No mistakes today but we are having to figure our the best way to moor the boat according to our current berth.
I am aware that I'm not as strong, agile or enthusiastic as I used to be. Neither is S. We will have to simplify as much as possible to make it less stressful.
Yesterday morning I gave Baldrick half an apple which he ignored completely.
In the evening I explained to S why the apple was still in his dish, adding that when Grace was around, they used to eat apples with great enthusiasm.
18 days after her death, this was the very first time that I mentioned her name in his presence.
Then he ate the apple, which proves that he knows the word apple, and the meaning of what I said.
It also shows that we often underestimate the ability of dogs to understand language and are smarter than we thought.
So much for dogs. As for people, it works the other way round, at least for me. I normally assume that people are much smarter than they actually are. Then the question arises whether they were always that way, whether I was just slow to understand reality or whether something happened to cause their decline.
This huge and gorgeous sailing boat was anchored nearby. I would love to see it under sail.
