Axe Head

A 6500 year old polished flint axe head. A beautiful object, it was this and its like which cut down the ancient forests of Britain.

I am now on a guided group tour of ancient sites in Dorset and Wiltshire. This morning was Cerne Abbas - the Giant, who is ready for his 20 year rechalking, is just about visible in the landscape. We walked above and around him, viewing the ancient barrows and platform which sit on top of the ridge. Also the ancient sacred spring in the village, the remnants of the former abbey, and an archaeological dig. Then lunch in a pub followed by a visit to the local brewery. And finally the hugely impressive Maiden Castle, possibly the most impressive Iron Age hill fort in Europe.
