Playing life by ear.

Not Jasmine.

Jasmine Paolini won her way to the Wimbledon finals. This is a first for Italy and also at almost three hours, the longest ever women's Wimbledon, semi-final match ......
And she finished fresh as a daisy.

What has this got to do with me? Nothing.
I planned my trip to the Santo Spirito hospital in Rome very carefully, so that I wouldn't get lost and had plenty of time. Then, fool that I am, I told S about it and he insisted on coming with me.
I was going to take the train, metro and a short walk, but he said we should take a taxi from the station. Ok, but, not from too near the station, so we began to walk and walk and kept on walking until we reached the hospital.
A 4.5km walk took 75 minutes in the searing heat and so much noise. On the way, we just happened to pass by his high school and just happened to pass by where he was a boarder, as a child. I wasn't surprised because over the many years this has become normal.
We go out together to do something and inevitably do something else, such as pop into work to check the  pool pumps,  or down to the marina to check on the boat and always without telling me. It just happens. I find myself somewhere else.
Half way through our walk, I began to feel hot, sweaty and exhausted, while S was really enjoying it.
After a long wait, we eventually got to see the gut specialist
It began on an unpleasant note. I had copied my virtual colonscopy download onto a disk for him to see for himself. Quite sharply, he said he wasn't interested in it and the radiologist's report was what he wanted, assuming the radiogist isn't a total idiot, so I gave it to him.
That, to my ignorant ears, sounded like preferring the opinion of a critic instead of reading a book or seeing the play.
So what have I come here for, I asked him. You tell me, he answered.
After a bad start, we both behaved like adults and he was very competent and helpful, gave me new meds, info and advice.
It turned out he went to the same summer camp as our own kids when he was a boy, and may have actally wrecked the same sailing dinghy.
Small world.
Good luck to Jasmine for her finals match tomorrow.
Luckily for her, unlike me, she has endless stamina.
For those who heard in the UK news of a man who killed three women with a crossbow, he was found in the cemetary, just around the corner from where I grew up, and where as a girl, I would sometimes go for a walk, because I liked the peaceful atmosphere .
