The Brutalisation of Lovely George Square

Just when I had come to terms with the rubbish summer as long as I could indulge in some sea swimming on days when it wasn’t raining or blowing a gale, the environmental agency SEPA have detected EColi in the water at Portobello and bathing has been banned because of the danger to health. My plans for this morning shot to pieces as are those of the families holidaying in Porty with small children unable to even paddle in the sea. Are sandcastles out of bounds too?

I made an excursion via George Square to local shops for yarn this morning and found the whole square completely brutalised in an effort to turn it into an Underbelly theme park. The road is of course closed and this is one very long lorry parked in pole position of a line of them. Needless to say, the gardens are closed to the residents nearby.

While this is all happening, yards away there are graduations taking place in McEwan Hall. It’s a mixture of the sublime and the ridiculous.

It’s suddenly Friday again and hey presto the TGIF drinks are looming in an hour. A bright spot in the week.
