World-famous (in Gloucester) Hornets tournament

Up early, and began the day by catching up on blips. I have still a fair few backblips to catch up on, but fewer than before, so my OCD mind is resting a little easier.

Today is the second day of the Gloucester Hornets tournament. Having lost one and drawn one yesterday, Ottawacker Jr.’s team needed a win (and a good one) to have any chance of going through to the quarter-final play offs. I was hoping for a dull 0-0 draw (à la Ingerlund), so I could get home out of the raging heat with everyone’s honour intact. It wasn’t to be: from the depths of somewhere dark, OISC managed a convincing 5-0 win (almost doubling in one game their goals total for the season) and so that was it for the rest of the day. Still, I thought to myself, at least we can get home out of the heat, have some breakfast or coffee, perhaps, re-start the day.

That wasn’t to be, either. We’d brought in Ottawacker Jr.’s friend Lucas to the game – and he was called up for the U13s team in the following match. Ottawacker Jr. wanted to watch and support, so we did – me sheltering from the sun in a very convincing masculine fashion under one of Mrs. Ottawacker’s umbrellas we had found in the boot of the car. Of course, this particular humiliation wouldn’t have happened had Ottawacker Jr. brought his own baseball cap and not had to borrow mine…

After the U13 match (3-2 win), we had to shift grounds to another part of the city for the quarter-finals. Cue high-speed driving, with a screeched stop to pick up some water and Gatorade, to Shefford Park. Thankfully, normal service was resumed for Ottawacker Jr.’s team, and they crashed to a convincing 3-0 defeat against a suspiciously large Gloucester Hornets’ U12 team (one of their players had to stop the game for a shave at one point). This meant, after six hours in the 35º heat, that we could go home.

At home, we finally had lunch and Ottawacker Jr. finally got clean. And I didn’t venture out for the rest of the day.
