At a Junction

Sixty years ago, this Massey-Ferguson 35 became the 'old model', its minimalist curved mudguards - like little wings - and gentle rounded lines replaced by the confident, angular, modern design of the model 135, as technology marched forward

The previous year, Harold Wilson had summoned "the white heat of technology" to the Labour cause and in 1964 he fought an election campaign to end "13 wasted years" of Conservative government. He won, but only with a majority of four

I took this picture as we walked home from the polling station. I like to think this gentleman had used his iconic machine from that year of change for the same purpose, though I doubt if it is true

I think people from almost all political persuasions have concluded that we have lived through some more wasted years in the last decade or more, even if no-one seems very clear about what they want to do about it to make things better. The polls indicate that the word 'landslide' will be the most over-used one in tomorrow's papers. Let's hope that a new parliament can achieve something more significant than changing the shape of the mudguards
