Def MaMa Def

This time of year always brings the Africa Oyé festival to Liverpool. Sadly, I only managed to make it to the 2nd day of this year’s extravaganza but I was really pleased to be there to witness a performance by Def MaMa Def, Senegal’s answer to Salt-N-Pepa (a reference which definitely dates me!).

Mamy Victory and Defa were pursuing individual musical careers when they met in 2017 and decided to join forces to produce a contemporary Pan-African sound, blending Afrofuturist hip-hop with traditional musical styles from across the continent - and some killer dance moves.

They played live today with their drummer, Sym Sam, and electronics maestro/beatmaker, Baay Sooley, and had the crowd in the palm of their collective hand!

Here they are with ‘Kalanakh’ https://youtu.be/4BDqdHztA44?si=rbD8RhaaZXfKqV04

I’ve added a few more shots of them in the Extras.
