J and the fjord
Day 14. Woke up as the ship entered Burgerbukta fjord which was stunning. Zodiac cruse this morning around the fjord seeing some birds and Baluga whales, couple of nice glaciers as well. Afternoon activity was changed as there weren’t as many people on the long hike as they expected so it was split into 2 groups, we were in in the first group for the landing, while the others had a talk about polar bears. There was an old trappers hut owned by a woman called Wanny Volzstadt. She was a taxi driver in Tromso and heard all the stores from the trappers in Svalbard so decided to move there with her 2 sons. Its reported that she killed 77 polar bears herself in her time in Svalbard. The hut is still used from time to time by people. The high cliffs were full of kittiwakes and there was a nesting turn in front of the hut. Lots of flowers in the moss in front of the cliffs as well. Back to the ship for the polar bear history lecture which was OK.
