Goin' courtin'

This is not a reference to the song by the same name in the musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. That was however a favourite film of my Mum's because, like her, two of her sisters, and me, they all had red hair. The songss were pretty good, although the story involving the abduction of women by the brothers now looks rather questionable albeit they all lived and loved happily ever after. We'll pass on another of the film's songs, Sobbin' Women,  as it draws on the story of the Sabine women, an entirely inappropriate antecedent
No, what I had in mind was Froggie-went-a-courtin', which I remember being sung by both  Pete Seeger and Burl Ives on Junior Choice record request programmes. Apparently the song can be traced back to 16th century Scotland and even Bob Dylan has covered it. Not that there was a partner frog in sight when I came upon this one in the garden.
