A delicate balance
I saw this bee pollinating a foxglove on my evening walk and I was reminded of the vital role they play in the delicate balance of our planet.
If bees were to disappear from this planet:
1.They would be severe consequences for both the environment and the human population.
2. Crops would be reduced leading to decline in food production, Also, there would be
loss of biodiversity, and economic consequences.
If humans were to disappear from this planet:
1. There would be: reduced carbon emissions: Humans are one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through activities such as burning fossil fuels for energy and transportation.
2. Ecosystem recovery: Many human activities, such as deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction, have had negative impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity. With the absence of humans, these activities would cease, allowing ecosystems to recover and restore their natural balance.
3.
Pollution reduction: Humans generate large amounts of waste and pollution, including plastic waste, chemical pollutants, and noise pollution. The disappearance of humans would result in a reduction in these pollutants, leading to cleaner air, water, and land.
4. Changes in urban areas: In the absence of humans, they would gradually be reclaimed by nature, with vegetation growing over buildings and infrastructure.
Overall, the disappearance of humans would bring about significant changes to the planet's ecosystems, climate, and the survival of various species.
I am reminded of James Lovelock ,scientist and environmentalist who postulated the Gaia hypothesis :. “ The planet will take care of itself . Its humans who should be afraid.”
