Classic picturesque
Old Scotney Castle from the terrace of the “new” house. The house was designed for the Hussey family and completed in 1847. It is claimed to be the best example of picturesque in the country.
Each room was carefully positioned to give exceptional views of the bucolic countryside surrounding the house. An antidote to the formal grace and elegance of the Capability Brown style of landscape architecture. At least, that’s what I read.
A pleasant day out exploring the old castle and parklands and the walled garden too. I particularly enjoyed the walled garden as it is in one of those that my dad spent his entire working life and I have fond memories of from my younger years. They’re doing no dig too. It’s a garden to be envious of!
After the gardens we explored the wider estate. Saw only one or two people in the far distance. All the crowds were around and about the house and gardens.
I was trying to follow the estate trail map. Beautifully drawn: as much good as a chocolate teapot. Amongst other things the map needed a scale, a north indicator and needed the path surface to be shown rather than giving the impression that the trails were all on well defined, tracks. Which they weren’t.
