A plethora of puffins

So much rain last night - and then fog in the morning. Come on weather, give us a break!
But it didn’t stop the ferries running and we were out of Kirkwall and on our way to Westray by breakfast time.
Still foggy when we arrived but our first stop on the island was a walk along cliff to the sea stacks of Castle o’Burrian. Stunning sea cliffs aside, the main attraction was the teams of puffins nesting in the cliff tops. So many, so cute. These little fellas know how to pose - we came across quite a few close to the path so it was a treat to get some photos and see them so near.
And it was a big day in Westray - the North Isles Sports Day- races and team events for the neighbouring schools and also adults. It was so impressive to see how well it was organised and the commitment and support of everyone attending. Not the best of weather - chilly, but no rain. We didn’t last till the final event but felt we had been part of an important day in island life. Did I mention the teas - what a spread!
To round off the day we had fish and chips from Jacks Chippy (open Saturdays and Wednesdays).
