Family Camp Tradition

"Cinnamon Buns," affectionally know as "sticky buns," have come to be a favorite every Wednesday morning tradition at family camp; it's happened every summer since we have been attending "Campus By the Sea" on Catalina Island way back in 1980 when our two kids were young adolescents.

This photo was taken at 6:30 a.m. and does not include the huge pans of scrambled eggs, of sausages, of oatmeal, of breakfast potatoes and of fruit. The camp chef, D'arcy, is a professional and he and his young family have lived at camp for the past four years. D'arcy and his staff prepare and serve delicious food. This camp has served amazingly wonderful food since that first summer we attended. We wouldn't return if the food wasn't good and in our many years of volunteering as camp counselors we've been to several camps that know nothing about quality delicious food.

Wednesday is "hike to Avalon day" and more than half the camp takes the option to do the hike which exits at 7:00 a.m. after they've all had a chance to have breakfast (or not have it, if they choose not to). Those who don't want to hike get to eat breakfast between 6:30 and 8:30 and then get two other options for the day: take the boat to Avalon or stay in camp for quiet leisurely relaxation.

Today we elected to not do the hike and to not take the boat to Avalon. Because we have little Tristan with us and we know that he loves the playground and the shoreline, we opt to stay in camp. Our son-in-law John and Ashly and Emerson all started out on the hike. Ashly decided quickly that she did not want to hike and came back to take the 9:30 boat to Avalon and meet-up with them. There are two choices of boat times to come back to camp: 1:00 or 3:00. The three of them came back on the later one.

We've had a great leisurely long day. After evening dinner the highlight of Wednesday night is when the basketball court becomes a dance floor for the "square, circle, and line" dancing. The only one of the six of us interested in joining in was, of course, little Tristan. Even though he is six-years-old, he is very little and watching him in and amongst all the teens and college-age staff was so much fun. All the "big kids" treat Tristan so well. One of the young staff guys, Spencer, actually picked-up Tristan and carried him through the dance motions when they were too fast for Tristan to keep up with. I caught lots of pictures of this for our albums and my FaceBook.

But for today I thought the "sticky buns" should be in the spotlight.

So that's today's island adventure.
