The forecast was good so we took the cable car up to the top of Untersberg near Salzburg, where there were good views of the Austrian mountains and to the north the flatter area beyond Salzburg.  The memorial with an ice pick, is to the mountain infantry troops who served during the two World Wars. The border footpath runs along the fence on the ridge so it was possible to have a foot in both countries and I saw some butterflies including a yellow Swallowtail and many different alpine flowers and several birds including choughs. According to legend Charlemagne is waiting inside the mountain where he is looked after by small dwarves.  He wakes up every hundred years and when he sees the choughs still flying around he sleeps for another century.

Later we sat outside in the shade for a drink beside the strange marble ball mill.  Since 1683 many tons of marble balls were made and were very popular for children’s toys. The article and video in this shows how the balls with fascinating patterns are made by being ground by water.
