Often graves are interesting with symbolism and some indicate the occupation of the deceased.  This one in Pencaitland is of William Davidson who died in 1707 aged 57 and his son Robert who died in 1710 aged 24.  Robert was a wright with the tools of his trade of an axe and two chisel on the gravestone.  At the foot of the stone are the skull and crossbones signifying death.
Extra Another has an iron and scissors indicating that it belonged to a tailor while another dated 1752 marks the grave of a collier.   It has a pickaxe, wedges, a hammer and a straight tined pickaxe which was used for working in confined areas such as narrow coal seams as well as having a skull and an hourglass which are emblems of mortality.
