Daughter S met us at Munich Airport then we diverted to Burghausen Castle which at 1051 metres is the longest castle in Europe and next year will be 1000 years old. It is protected by high walls and lies on a narrow rocky ridge between the Salzach river and Wohrsee. It was too late to go into the main keep but we were able to walk right through the five courtyards which were originally all protected by moats, portcullises and drawbridges. The photo by the fast flowing river was taken in the evening from the Austrian side looking up to the castle over the old town in Germany.. We then drove to our little hotel in a village with views of the nearby Alps and cows in several barns scattered around in the village and ate outside in the hot sunshine which was a contrast to a temperature of 7c when we parked the car at Edinburgh Airport.
