Life in a Northern Town

Couldn’t resist!

I was up at sunrise but the Matterhorn was covered in fog, so I went back to sleep for an hour. We were on the 8am train and reached Gornergrat in glorious sunshine - it was really beautiful up there and very peaceful - we took the requisite photos of course. The clouds were swirling around the Matterhorn very atmospherically, and the whole place felt quite magical. The hike to the lake with the reflection of the Matterhorn was closed due to heavy snow - we thought perhaps that was the authorities just being over cautious but there is a huge amount of snow on all the high trails - maybe 5 or 6 feet, so we travelled on to Riffelberg for amazing apple strudel on a terrace below the Matterhorn, with marmots playing in the snow all around - see extras for a couple of pictures here. We congratulated ourselves for early rising every time we saw the later “up” trains with folk packed like sardines - All the clouds have cleared and the mountain has been in full view all day - what a treat.

This afternoon we did a hike - advertised as “easy” and allegedly taking an hour. I can only assume that assessment was done by some 25 year old mega-fit Swiss alpinist! Nonetheless we enjoyed it, despite the 100m precarious suspension bridge in the middle.

Tonight fondue!
