CannyScot's Day

Winkie, a brave Pigeon

A bright day.

We went for a walk/scooter ride along the waterfront at Broughty Ferry. We came across this new sculpture by David Annand of Winkie, a very brave carrier pigeon.
In 1942 a Beaufort Bomber had ditched in the North Sea. Winkie, while serving with the RAF, flew 120 miles through stormy weather and covered in oil to deliver the Crew’s distress message.
Within minutes of her arrival in Broughty Ferry, a rescue operation was launched from RAF Leuchars and the crew brought to safety.
In1943 she was awarded the PDSA Dicken Medal from Maria Dicken.
