Tiny Toy

This little Mexican bobblehead toy charms me every time I look at it. We looked after our Magnolia St. neighbors' dog while they went on a trip to Mexico. Each of their young children picked out one of these little toys and gave them to me when they returned. I can't find the other one (a turtle), but this one has survived on my bookshelf for many years.

If you are interested in toys and the things they tell us about the people who make them and the children who play with them, and find yourself in the vicinity of Santa Fe, New Mexico, I really recommend the International Museum of Folk Art. Its a fascinating peek into many cultures. Nobody is trying too hard when they are making/playing with toys. (And it's a nice break from kivas and latigas and Santa Fe style).

I tend to be one of those people wearing a sweatshirt when everyone else is wearing tank tops and shorts, so despite the predictions of 'scorching' weather today, I was still wearing my sweatshirt when I left for a facial with Gail today. John said it was hot outside when he came in from the garden for lunch, but it has been perfectly comfortable inside the house. There seems to be a need to dumb down and sensationalize everything, including the weather. Seems to me it's extreme enough as it is, but I guess the weather is one of those things everyone can relate to so the weather reports seem to take up half the newscast.

Tomorrow there will be pictures of kids playing in fountains and students lying in the shade, but the county won't open cooling centers for the vulnerable until the temperatures are over 100 for three days. Since that practically never happens, I guess that means they just won't bother...maybe they should be looking at the weather predictions on the news instead....
