Horton house ruins

Saturday 25 May
Today we were leaving Jekyll Island, and spending the night on Jen and Jason’s driveway in the Atlanta suburb of South Decatur, before continuing tomorrow to spend a few day in North/South Carolina. Jen was up first, taking her tent down, and spreading her ground sheet out to dry. After breakfast, we washed up, she finished packing her stuff and was on her way. It took us a bit longer to straighten up everything in the camper, to make it safe for towing, then we followed. As we were leaving the island we passed the ruins of the Horton House, quite a landmark on the island. It was built of tabby, a type of concrete made by burning oyster shells to create lime, then mixing it with water, sand, ash and broken oyster shells - all products readily available. It is one of the oldest tabby buildings in Georgia and is listed on the National Register of historic places.
