world in a grain of sand

guided tour

we spent the day with our daughter's boyfriend's parents, who live in Madrid, and are Madrillenos born and bred. We had a fantastic tour of the old city, including a wood panelled tapas bar, and this sweet shop. The sweets are made by nuns, who have two door bells - one for sweets and one for more holy business.
The old streets have beautiful tiled street signs and tiled balconies. Our tour included the palace, a battlefield, the Atheneum, the theatre district, and to cater for M's interest the Atocha station - which contains a botanical garden complete with terapins.
We saw so much more - and we so lucky to have local guides throught the twisty streets. Afterwards we had dinner at their apartment so felt we'd really had a taste of Spanish life.
