tempus fugit

By ceridwen

Let's twist again like we did last summer

It's always satisfying to see the young climbing bean plants ( image 1) reach out for their poles and begin to curl around them, always anti-clockwise, from left to right.

Bindweed, or Convolvulus (image 2), with which my garden is richly endowed unfortunately,  twines sinuously the same way. But Honeysuckle (3) curls clockwise as do many other climbing plants.
The direction of the twist is genetic and unalterable (and doesn't vary in the southern hemisphere).

I didn't know until I researched this that the once popular singing duo Flanders and Swann [you have to be a certain age even to recognise their names] wrote a charming song about this very fact.

It starts
“The fragrant Honeysuckle spirals clockwise to the sun
And many other creepers do the same.
But some climb anti-clockwise; the Bindweed does, for one,
Or Convolvulus, to give her proper name.”

and goes on to describe a Romeo&Juliet type of misalliance created by the unalterable botanical heritage of each. It's a gem!
