King’s Caves
A beautiful day for our last day in the island. We had a slow start, not quite sure where to go today. All of us are tired after a few late nights in a row. It doesn’t get dark here until nearly midnight!
We drove off with a plan to go and visit King’s Caves. Couldn’t resist a stop at Pirnmill beach first. A&M enjoyed the swings then a paddle in the sea on the sandy beach as the tide was out.
We stopped to fill the water bottles at a cafe and ended up staying for lunch in the sun.
We finally left to find the caves.
The walk down through the woods was steeper & further than I’d thought but still worth the visit.
‘Historic King's Cave is one of several locations in which Robert the Bruce is said to have had his famed encounter with a spider.’
Anya freaked out at the model spider on the outside of the main cave but Max was fascinated by the story & I was intrigued by the early Christian carvings; Celtic crosses & symbols.
We dipped our feet in the water & cooled off before heading back up to the van.
Back to the site & an hour to chill in the sun. We ate out at the only pub in the area & one last visit to the castle ruin for Max before bedtime. The midges had reappeared but it was a gorgeous evening (extra)
