Cake!

The day off began with an early start to take the car to the garage for a service. I average 350-400 miles a week and am diligent about maintenance. I decided to take Dog with me for the walk after dropping it off. When we left the sun was shining. 5 minutes later the rain was torrential and we both got soaked!
Mid morning and the chap from the water company arrived to do an efficiency check and left me with a swizzle thing on my kitchen tap and an egg timer for my shower! Apparently I should be able to wash, condition my hair and wash and rinse my ample body in four minutes!
Midday and the garage rang to say the car was ready. I did put the dog’s coat on this time, which was just as well because the sun/rain was a repeat of earlier, and this time we almost drowned!
As I walked to the garage however I couldn’t stop thinking about the rest of the day. Back in lockdown was I was still ‘me’ I had to find things to do. Prior to 2022 I couldn’t do ‘nothing’ and not having hobbies I struggled in the early days of spring 2020. One of the things I found renewed pleasure in was baking, and I baked a lot! B was very happy with that! For two years however I have struggled with doing anything. No motivation, no desire and just a general ‘what’s the point, and can’t be bothered’.

Back to today and all I could think of was the dreariness of a long, lonely, wet afternoon ahead! So - on the way home I stopped at the little local shop and bought flour, butter, sugar and the only cake flavouring they had, desiccated coconut.

I think I  found a little bit of ‘me’ today when I baked that cake. It did make me sad too, though I don’t really know why. So, Alf next door was the happy recipient of half a cake to take with him tomorrow when he visits his recently bereaved sister, and this evening Ann messaged to say she will be popping in tomorrow for coffee, so I do at least have something to offer!
Was it a one off? Will I do it again? I guess we have to wait and see!
