Its the Way It Is

Social Prescribing

What is that? I hear you ask.

Traditionally in Ireland when anyone suffered from depression or anxiety or any type of mental health issue, they went to their GP and were most likely prescribed medications.

Well there is a concerted move away from this with ‘social prescribing’. In a nutshell, (see upper right hand corner), your GP can now refer you to a community based activity where you can experience a sense of community, play an active role and basically connect with like minded people. I am hoping to become a volunteer in facilitating this.

In later years, loneliness is one of the leading causes of sadness (and I believe this to be true) and social prescribing is a new concept in the community - helping a person to feel part of it and not isolated. Hopefully you can read the small print because it’s very interesting.

It’s almost 2pm and I am going to my friends house as she is hosting probably one of Nadal’s last tournaments in the French Open in Paris. There will be 8 of us who have played tennis together for years. I am bringing a potato’s bravas tapas (sorry auto spelling not helping me here) and a grilled tomato anchovy thing with garlic infused olive oil. There will be loads of food and great craic and we will toast Rafa’s great career.

Go Rafa
