Fuggerei

The Fuggerei is the world's oldest social housing scheme, established by Jakob Fugger (known variously as Jakob the Younger and Jakob the Rich) in 1516. 150 local Catholic residents are housed there to this day, paying 0.88 Euros a year in rent. The development must be used for this purpose for ever. It is maintained using assets bequeathed by Fugger and his descendants, notably substantial forests serving the local paper industry.

70% of the houses were destroyed by bombing in 1944, an event commemorated in a preserved air raid shelter.  They were rebuilt in the 1940s/50s.
