Young cattle

Andrew bought some young steers to grow out. He has them at the lease block at Narromine and is supplementing their diet with hay and grain.

He has put the cows on the lucerne - it is risky because they can get bloat and die. He made sure they were full on hay before putting them in, and he is running sheep in the paddock with them because the cows are put off by the sheep smell so they are less likely to gorge themselves. He puts oil on their water in the trough - a special bloat drench oil. It helps them to burp up the gas or something. isbiJG would understand how it works.

“Grass fed” is promoted in marketing meat these days. We don’t have grass all year round so the cattle are on pasture and get supplementary feed as needed. This sounds like a more varied and balanced diet to me. The main thing is they have a good life with their mates in the paddock. Trees for shelter and to rub on, room to roam around, a nice man who comes with food and checks they are all right.
