Naranco and Prehistoric Cave Museum
Today was a full on day - we drove towards Oveido as we wanted to visit the Pre Romanesque churches nearby - Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo ( UNESCO WH site ) . We found it hard to find parking to begin with so drove nearly all she way up the mountain and ended up faving coffeeoutside a bar with fantastic views over Oveido .
The information centre before visiting was interesting but unfortunately the churches themselves were closed for renovations. They are 9th century and very striking - the Naranco one was first built as a palace and you can see the Roman influence in the four pillar structure.
Afterwards we drove on to Teverga Valkey where there is a Parque de prehistoria - we weren’t sure what to expect but it was excellent- ancient breeds of horses and a recreation of the cave paintings from the Asturias and around the world as well as an impressive modern gallery explaining theories about the art and showing implement md including a small flute . A recreation of music imagined from the time played ! The caves are recreated exactly as they are in reality and took over 30 years of work. It was phenomenal and we only paid a tiny amount to enter .
