A Cheap Thrill
Riding 20 miles of potholes in pole position on the top of a shoogly double decker bus through a ghostly countryside cloaked in haar couldn’t get any more exciting; and all for free.
Being tossed about in a bumpy mystery tour as we ploughed through the holes provides a thrill which would cost dearly in a fun fair .The finish was Peebles, less haar but dull.
I was in the town to meet up with friends from Kelso in a kind of halfway house. We have known each other for 60years ever since we met as rookie young marrieds in Hamilton, a place in the early 60s as far removed from life in Edinburgh or Aberdeen as one could possibly imagine.
We had a delicious lunch at Coltman’s on the High street, the café where the Stobo daughters and I meet every October. When we came out, so was the sun and the town was transformed. The power of the sun knows no bounds .
Home in a single decker bus which didn’t provide the same thrill as the outward journey.
