Civil crossing

This is known as a "zebra" crossing.

Over the years these type of crossings have been replaced by "pelican" crossings which are those traffic lights that you press and cars stop to let you cross the road. You rarely see a zebra crossing where I live.

To my mind the zebra crossing is a whole lot more civil. Cars stop because they want to stop and most folk crossing smile at the drivers who generally acknowledge them. Where as at the pelican crossing - the motorists are generally angry that they've been stopped and the pedestrians run across for fear the lights will change!

Another example of progress taking us back the way. Bring back the zebra crossings!
