Past times

One of the reasons part of our house is falling down is because a previous owner screwed up doing some renovations of their own. We know when this happened because of the newspapers we found stuffed into the walls. For all I know, these were load-bearing newspapers. Here you see a Daily Telegraph from 4 October 1984. The front page headlines are mostly about the miners' strike. Behind this is the North Devon Journal-Herald (presumably the precursor of what is now the North Devon Journal - the paper I once briefly wrote for) from a few days previously. Don't they look lovely?

Another day of clearing out the house - work begins tomorrow. The boy had a full day in Reception class today, in preparation for September; he seemed to enjoy it. We're ending our 4 July by watching Independence Day - on VHS! Holiday cottages are the only places in the world where VHS still exists. We've really had a day of time travel today.
