Fishing in Fiumicino?
Wondering what to do while waiting for the plane to arrive at Rome’s Fiumicino airport? How about goin’ fishin’ in Fiumicino? “Fiumicino” means “little river” in Italian. The Tiber River flows from Rome to Fiumicino where it meets the sea. In search of the Tiber River’s outlet, we walked to the very end of the Lungomare, then up on the breakwater where Mike could catch a glimpse of the river mouth (he is looking towards the river). Also on the breakwater were several, very large wooden fishing contraptions. These trabucchi lower nets in the water to capture fish. I’m not sure if they are still operational. Note the incoming airplane in the distance to the left of Mike. Why are we even here? Our daughter’s flight arrives to Rome Airport tomorrow morning. We drove down with a rental car to pick her up. We decided the 4-5 hour train ride to Lucca would be too much after an exceedingly long travel day.
