Baby lapwing
Lapwings or 'peewits' come here to nest each spring. They nest on open ground, which means that farmers such as my brother have to be extra careful which jobs they can and can't do in the fields, so as not to disturb the nests. Sadly, this hasn't happened in many areas, so peewit numbers are declining. This year, for the first time that I can remember, a pair has nested in the field close to the back of the house, so we can watch from the window as their two little ones grow up. Sadly, we think one has died. We haven't seen it for a few days, and it had an injured wing, so a predator probably caught it. The photo is very fuzzy as it was taken on zoom through the window.
