The Past and the Present
I photographed the pile of sea scallop shells on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland in 2005, my first trip to Scotland. I brought home a few of them and this weekend I transformed one into my version of a Sailor's Valentine. I used pink marbled tissue paper to line the inside of the shell and edged it with gold. My biggest challenge was figuring out how to hang it. I might make a couple more with the two remaining shells if I can find more vintage images that would suit. I saw my first sailor's valentine on a trip to Nantucket in 1970 and although this is very different from the shell creations they made, it is a reminder of my first trip to Scotland and that works for me.
