Church House Inn

This beautiful pub, (right of picture) opposite the village cricket ground, and next to the church, is just round the corner in Marldon. It is a delightful place with a lovely beer garden.
We celebrated Jacqui’s birthday here.
The pub is so called because it housed the builders and masons when the church was constructed. It dates back to 1400. Jacqui doesn’t date back as far as that, but our first visit was in 1972. Devon has far more pubs of this name than anywhere else. According to my copy of Better Pubs in Devon (1974) there are eleven church houses, and more that have changed their names. We used to put ticks in the book, and the date of our visit, just like birdwatching, or trainspotting.E.g. ‘The Cary Arms, Babbacombe, MANY SIGHTINGS.
When the day finally dawns, this little book will be proof of how we used our time on earth purposefully and wisely . We had a great day starting with breakfast at the Guardhouse cafe at Berry Head, and ending
here, in Marldon. Bird of the Day - sparrow hawk at Berry Head Quarry.
