Lenticular cloud

We have had rather a lot of wind recently even in our valley which is usually protected.Ii spotted this lenticular cloud which are not uncommon in the mountains when there is both wind and moisture. Pilots of powered aircraft tend to avoid flying near lenticular clouds because of the turbulence and sinking air of the rotor generated at the trailing edge of these clouds, but glider pilots actively seek them out in order to climb in the upward moving air at the leading edge. The precise location of the rising air mass is fairly easy to predict from the orientation of the clouds. "Wave lift" of this kind is often very smooth and strong, and enables ]gliders to soar to remarkable altitudes and to cover great distances. This morning I played a match with my training partner which I narrowly lost 7-5 in the final set. He was pleased as it is the first time has beaten me for a while, me less so! I learnt today that our departmental final is to played at the home courts of the other opposition rather than at a neutral location as we were previously lead to understand. This does not seem fair as we will have to travel a long way and they will have home advantage but apparently the departmental committee has decided and that is that. We were supposed to be having an extra reading practice this afternoon. This went ahead but the visiting ringers who had promised to help us out did not turn up so we were rather limited in what we could ring.
