Cine films come to life!
Today, before we headed home, we visited the town of Sherborne and, in particular, Sherborne School where my beloved late brother went - many years ago! He was 13 years older than me (same mother, different father) and we worked out that he probably started boarding there in 1953, the year I was born. He brought much joy and happiness wherever he went and I still miss him.
The woman coming towards us in the shot was so helpful when we explained why we were there and asked us if we'd like to go through the gate to get another view of the school. This is the place I remember so well from old cine films of the school's cadet force marching around, including my brother Johnny! Sherborne Abbey can be seen behind the school buildings. In case anyone is interested, below is a little bit about the school's origins.
Sherborne School is a 13–18 boys public school and boarding school located beside Sherborne Abbey, in the parish of Sherborne,Dorset. The school has been in continuous operation on the same site for over 1,300 years. It was founded in 705 AD by St Adhelm and, following the dissolution of the monasteries, re-founded in 1550 by Kind Edward VI, making it one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom.
