Castelo Évoramonte

We drove today from Évora to Elvas, near the Spanish border and just across from Badajoz.  On the way this strange castle appeared so we left the main road and investigated.  It was a very picturesque little town on the hill; the view from the castle down one side of the village is in the Extra.

Elvas was even more picturesque and we can recommend a visit.  The many forts are amazing feats of engineering and still largely intact – as is the 8km aqueduct, built up on tiered arches.

Tomorrow we leave Évora for Beja, just for night before spending some time in the Algarve, where I can visit my aged mother.
