Emerald damselfly
I chanced upon this beautiful damselfly on Monday lunchtime by the sustainable urban drainage pond on the Park-and-Ride area near my office. Using online identification guidance and some additional but more blurry photos that I took, I'm pretty sure this is a female emerald damselfly, Lestes sponsa. It is also known as the Common Spreadwing. Following the intervention of bumblebee experts from Stirling University, Stirling Council was convinced to stop mowing all the vegetation around the pond, leaving it to grow up, flower and provide a better habitat for wildlife. And it is full of bees, birds and other wildlife now, and a riot of wild flowers. This lovely damselfly is a fine example of this.
