From the train
Here is a view from the train as it left Horton-in-Ribblesdale heading north. The River Ribble can be seen as it winds its way through the drumlins from Ribblehead to Horton. Of course this post should have come before this one in the story of the River Ribble, but it can only be seen from the train.
We are now home after a little three day adventure and we have done it all by train and bus. Much preferable to driving.
So why did we go in the first place? I have a habit of seeing things that are on and that sound interesting and are in a place that I think we would like to go to. Gordon always agrees as he is always ready to go to something different. I book tickets and then much later we build up a little adventure around it. The event this time was an appearance by Simon Armitage in Huddersfield. That’s where we were last night - at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, a fine venue.
It was a great evening. Simon gave a poetry reading which was splendid - he was funny and serious, he was light-hearted and thoughtful. He established a rapport with the local audience, Huddersfield is his home town. A highly entertaining session.
Then, after an interval, he reappeared with his band - LYR. Singer-songwriter Richard Walters and multi-instrumentalist and producer Patrick Pearson harmonise with Simon’s spoken words to create the most amazing soundscape - quite mesmerising. I may return to this tomorrow as we have a day at home before we set out again on another adventure on Sunday.
