Making connections
Sunny, left, is my upstairs neighbor. She is South Korean, 87 years old, and befuddled (as are most of us) by various cell phone plans, confusing offers and unequal comparisons. Currently she has no phone nor internet, and she feels isolated and worried about scams. Sunny’s English is just enough to get by, maybe. Migyoung, with her back to the camera, is a good friend, South Korean, 60, and competent in both English and technology. (Their two faces, Extra.)
They had never met till today. I invited them to my place for tea, hoping they would like each other and that possibly Migyoung could counsel Sunny about a cell phone plan. It turns out their families are from the same region in South Korea, they have the same accent (I have to trust Migyoung on that), and Sunny is the age of Migyoung’s mother (now deceased), while Migyoung is the age of Sunny’s son (now living in South Korea). They clicked and have plans to meet again. I love it when that happens.
