The Wilfred Owen Window

This morning I was privileged to visit the Wilfred Owen Window at All Saints, Dunsden for an event organised by the Dunsden Owen Association. 

The window was installed last November to commemorate one of the most significant poets of the First World War and his time in Dunsden (1911-13) as lay assistant to the local vicar. The window was designed by Natasha Redina and won the design award in the Worshipful Company of Glaziers annual Stevens Competition. It is an astonishing multi-layered design in which images appear and disappear with changing light conditions. My blip focuses on the bottom (earthly) section of the four panels which incorporates the local landscape and heavily symbolic flowers (snowdrops, bluebells, poppies, daisies and thistles) with words from 'Deep under turfy grass' some of Owen's earliest verses written in response to a tragic cart accident in Dunsden. Following a talk about Owen's time in Dunsden and the design of the window, we walked the Wilfred Owen trail which visits places associated with Owen during his time in the village. A fabulous modern stained glass window well worth seeking out.
