G is for German Road Sign…
I’m not sure where we had any road signs on the island before the war but I’ve been told there were but they were all removed when the fear of German Occupation was growing. Either way when the Occupation happened the Germans found it nearly impossible to navigate around the island. So they created a grid system for the main roads with different colours heading north/south and east/west.
When I was a child we lived on a yellow route and I took little notice of the yellow road signs painted on walls all the way into town. After liberation these were just left to fade and other than those which have been restored recently there’s only the odd flecks of yellow paint if you know where to look for it.
This is a restored red route sign. I’ve added a colour version as an extra.
It was many years after the war before we had any road signs at all which made life very difficult for visitors. Our solution to this was to tell people that they were never far from the coast so keep driving until you hit the coast then you’ll soon get your bearings…
