Saturday Night

Guanajuato comes alive at night, especially a Saturday night. We have been somewhat remiss about getting downtown in the evening (something about that lengthy uphill climb dissuades us), but today we were determined to experience what we had mostly read about. It did not disappoint! The streets fill with people in all kinds of dress, from formal wedding attire (suits & long, elegant dress), to casual shorts and t-shirts. Interspersed are those who will lead the nightly "callejoneadas." These are roving parties, with live musicians dressed in period garb (shown here in the center of the swirling mass). Throw in an occasional person painted as a statue, or dressed as a devil, or performing a belly dancing routine, or a roving Mariachi band, and you have one heck wild time. Tonight was extra crazy as two dozen street racing cars came down this normally pedestrian only boulevard for an impromptu 40 minute car show, complete with thumping bass so loud I was surprised these century old buildings did not lose some stones.
