Abraham-Isaac-Jacob. Since January these very early spring flowers were showing even before the vast masses of adjacent snowdrops in Dalkeith Country Park. Oriental borage (Trachystemon orientalis) is quite rare in the wild and is a good source of food for early insects. The coarse leaves which look like comfrey leaves appear after the tiny blue and white flowers with rolled petals and as the flowers die back the purple stamens remain sticking out. I have no idea why it is also called Abraham-Isaac-Jacob although it sometimes refers to flowers that change colour as they mature.
