This was not to have been my main blip until I realised that it could be suitable for stujphoto’s MonoMonday “cone or pyramid.”
One of our favourite walks is along the coast between Gullane and Yellowcraigs then to Dirleton. It is very quiet between the two sandy beaches and it is rare to see more than ten people but is delightful with winding paths along dunes, rocky shores, sandy beaches and a low cliff walk with views across to islands. On the way there is a conical cairn with a propeller attached to the side. The stone cairn has a spyhole hole through which can be seen a view of the lighthouse on the island of Fidra just off the coast. It was commissioned as a memorial by the family of the 15th Duke of Hamilton (Scotland’s premier Duke) near Archerfield where he lived for many years before moving to Lennoxlove Castle shortly before he died. Among his interests was flying and in 1967 after he was invalided out of the RAF he returned to Scotland to work as a test pilot, principally on the Bulldog, a small all-purpose aircraft developed by Scottish Aviation at Prestwick. The propeller came from one of his biplanes.
Among the photos on the collage are two of the beaches and the effects of recent storms, notably some washed up lobster pots and the erosion beside the main footpath down onto Gullane beach which means that a temporary path has now been made.
