Today’s ecclesiastical building
The weather today was the worst yet, so since I am reading Cuddy we decided to go to Durham where there is a wide choice of indoor activities. It’s only about half an hour away from here, but it’s decades since we’ve been there.
We parked in the park and ride and headed straight for the cathedral. After exploring for a while, we laboured up the 392 steps of the tower. If we’d known before we started that when we got to the top it would be spitting with rain and the view shrouded in a grey mist, we wouldn’t have paid 7.50 each to do it … we stayed about three minutes, and there was no point in taking photos. We were not up for another 7.50 each to see a Lego model of the cathedral in the museum (especially as S had given a tenner as a donation when we entered the cathedral), so we headed for the cafe to warm up instead. The cathedral is a magnificent building with beautiful Norman arches and columns — another view in extras.
At this point we realised we hadn’t actually found Saint Cuthbert’s tomb, so we quickly rectified that error. On stepping outside, it was raining properly. We made a quick visit to the covered market (bof) and the mock Gothic Victorian town hall (meh) and then got fed up of the weather and caught the bus back to the car.
Back home, I quickly made some scones and we had a proper clotted cream tea, yummy. Now the chicken is pot-roasting in the oven while we wait for R to battle through the traffic from Kent.
