This is the day

I made good use of a very wet Saturday morning by achieving a lot of housework jobs, including turning the two zipped mattresses on our bed and changing the bed linen, followed by a quantity of ironing and yet more oven cleaning.

After lunch, when the sun decided to put in an appearance, we set off for our first walk since 19th February. I can’t believe it’s been that long. We did our usual circular route, skirting the Green and then doing a detour through Harts Grove. I’m always hopeful that I’ll see a wren hopping about in the undergrowth in the copse which was left when the site was developed. There’s a particular pile of branches and twigs where we’ve seen a wren before, and which I was delighted to blip, but we’ve never seen her there again since, sadly.

So instead I give you this structure which is situated in the copse, and is covered with moss and other plants. According to Historic England, this is part of the ruins of a former chapel probably built by the botanist Richard Warner when he lived at Harts House in the 18th century. It’s built of flint and brick, but with some ashlar and some reset pieces of mediaeval window tracery.
