Greylag Goose #33
Backblip
Our last full day in Norfolk and my husband decided to spend the day birding with me. I had a plan to go to Holkham to see if I could find the shorelarks and white fronted geese, but for the second year running, the road to the reserve was closed due to the Forestry Commission cutting the trees. No access all day :(
Since we didn't really know the area that well, we headed to Wells-next-the-Sea for a walk near the harbour instead where we saw plenty of birds, but no shorelarks, which wasn't an issue as we enjoyed the walk. We then popped along the coast to Salthouse for lunch and then back to Cley for a quick look in the middle hides - nothing unusual but plenty of waders, including the lovely avocets.
On the way home, we dropped by the flood plains at Stiffkey to see if we could locate the reported Glossy Ibis. It was about 4pm with not much light left in the day. We spent about 45 minutes searching, but couldn't find it. It just wasn't our day :)
Whilst we were there we saw this unusual looking bird, that I am assuming is either a leucistic Greylag goose, or a Greylag cross of some sort. Something a bit different anyway.
We got back around 6pm, had a quick snack and then settled down to an evening of the game 'Just One' with the rest of the group - always fun to end the week.
